Granolah spared Gas after defeating him with a Charged Finger Beam with the help of Goku and Vegeta. However, Gas was not killed because Granolah decided not to finish him off.
Gas then shot Monaito and continued to torment Goku and Vegeta, but in a very "demon" looking form. He was still very strong and was able to "feed onions" to Goku UI and Vegeta UE.
But suddenly Frieza appeared and with just one flying blow, he "gave" Gas a punch through the body, and Gas died immediately after. He also killed Elec, the leader of the Heeter and Gas's brother immediately after.
Frieza's power surprised Goku and Vegeta, then he revealed to everyone that he was in another world where time passed slower than in the real world. Here he trained for about 10 years to improve his own strength.
And since he doesn't exist in that universe, neither Gas nor Granolah's Dragon Wishes have any effect on his power. He also revealed that this training period is much longer than the time he trained to reach Golden Frieza form.
After defeating Gas, Frieza states that he cannot be weaker than Goku and Vegeta forever. He then transforms into his latest form, Black Frieza.
A fight between Frieza and Ultra Instinct Goku along with Ultra Ego Vegeta ensued. But both were quickly destroyed by Frieza just like how Frieza defeated Gas.
Frieza leaves after showing off his new transformation which he names Black Frieza. He also invites Maki and Oil to join his army and says that he is a kitchen staff. Whis then appears and revives Monaito, who gives Bardock's gauge to Goku. Goku then asks Whis if the strongest warrior that Oracle Fish mentioned was Frieza.
Whis did not answer directly, but Goku and Vegeta both knew the answer was yes. Goku said that he still needed to train to face Frieza, then Vegeta and Goku left with Whis. At the same time, Whis also told the two that there was still someone stronger than the current Frieza.
What did Frieza do to surpass both Goku UI and Vegeta UE
Surely you still remember in the episode Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F', Frieza grew stronger rapidly after only a few months of training. But he was still defeated by Goku vs Vegeta Blue.
But the time of several months of training to become Golden Frieza with power equal to Super Saiyan God has proven that Frieza's potential power is very large. This means that Frieza Black's new power after 10 years of training will be enhanced many times.
The current two states of Goku UI and Vegeta UE have been training hard for a long time to achieve this powerful state. And Frieza only needed a few seconds to defeat both of them without any obstacles.
For many fans, this Granolah arc ended on a disappointing note. As Gas was defeated and his latest True Ultra Instinct form was revealed. However, Frieza's new form appeared to save the story from fans' disappointment.
It will definitely be a plot point that could reveal new powers for Goku and Vegeta in the future. It could be Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego merging, or both of them in their above forms and achieving new SSJs. We'll have to wait and see what else chapter 87 reveals.
