How to clean your phone cleanly and safely to avoid Covid 19

Smartphones are becoming more and more popular and are used for many hours every day. It is not surprising that the surface of mobile phones, in addition to dirt, also contains many harmful bacteria and viruses.

Normally, cleaning the phone is not paid much attention because it is not very important. But in the current unpredictable Covid-19 epidemic situation, your smartphone also needs to be cleaned regularly, to avoid letting your "favorite phone" become a dangerous Covid-19 transmission medium. Cleaning your phone to avoid Covid-19 is very easy, you just need to follow the instructions below.

Tools needed to clean your phone

How to clean your phone cleanly and safely to avoid Covid 19

  • Distilled water
  • 70° alcohol or 90° alcohol
  • Spray bottle
  • 2 lint-free cloths
  • Cotton swab or wooden toothpick

Notes when cleaning the phone:

  • Tools that should NEVER be used to clean your phone: Detergents/floor cleaners, compressed air, aerosol sprays, Harsh solvents (acetone, benzene, toluene), bleach, ammonia, abrasive powder, hydrogen peroxide.
  • iPhone 7 and later have an oleophobic, fingerprint-resistant coating on the iPhone screen. Cleaning products and abrasive materials (alcohol, alcohol-based hand sanitizers) will degrade the coating and may scratch your iPhone.
  • You should wipe the phone from top to bottom, in one direction, not from bottom to top.
  • Distilled water should be used because some areas of water contain a lot of solids (hard water) which can scratch the phone.

Steps to clean your phone

Follow these cleaning steps to keep your phone free of dirt and germs.

Step 1: Remove accessories from the phone

Unplug the charger, cables, phone case or cover, and any other accessories that are attached to your phone. You may want to clean your headphones and charger separately. Then turn off your phone.

Step 2: Clean the ports on the phone

For places like the charging port, mic, speaker, clean with a dry cotton swab or wooden toothpick. Be gentle to avoid scratching.

Step 3: Clean the phone body

  • Phones with glass on the front and back, iPhone 7 and above: Mix a little soap with warm water: Dip a cleaning cloth in it, wring it out and wipe the sides and edges of the phone. Do this 1 to 2 times depending on how dirty the phone is, then use the remaining cloth, dip it in distilled water, wring it out and wipe until all the soap is gone.
  • Phones with protective film, or non-glass, iPhone 6S Plus and below: Mix distilled water and 70% alcohol in a 1:1 ratio, or mix 90-degree alcohol in a ratio of 40% alcohol and 60% water in a spray bottle, spray on a cloth and quickly wipe the sides of the phone. If you don't have a spray bottle, you can dip the cloth directly into the solution and wring it out until it's just damp, then wipe.

Then leave the phone for about 15 minutes for the alcohol to evaporate or dry completely.

Step 4: Clean phone accessories

Use the alcohol solution above, spray it on a towel and wipe clean the charging cord, charger, headphones, and phone case. The silicone case can be washed, you should use soap and wash it under running water to ensure that all bacteria and viruses are killed. Remember to dry it after washing.

Step 5. Install accessories for the phone

After at least 15 minutes, the phone and accessories are clean and dry, you can reattach the phone case, plug in the charger and headphones if needed.
