Qualcomm Launches X85 5G Modem With a Series of Notable Improvements
Qualcomm made a splash at MWC 2025 when it introduced its eighth generation 5G modem, the X85, which is expected to be used in flagship smartphones later this year. The Qualcomm X85 modem features a host of cutting-edge technical improvements, and of course, mainstream AI integration. However, the goal is not just to enhance connectivity, but also to improve performance and extend battery life.
In terms of specifications, the X85 is the first modem to support 400MHz bandwidth in 5G Sub-6 connections, and can reach speeds of up to 11.6Gbps on both Sub-6 and mmWave connections. It is also the first modem to support upload speeds of up to 3.7Gbps in certain scenarios. In addition to 5G and mmWave connections, the X85 also supports advanced satellite connections.
Another unique but exciting improvement of the Qualcomm X85 is support for FRMCS connectivity, the technology used to bring 5G to European rail systems, replacing the outdated 2G signals that passengers have been dealing with for years. The X85 also features a dedicated built-in AI processor, which speeds up AI inference by 30% compared to the previous generation. These improvements bring benefits in reduced latency, expanded coverage, and increased power efficiency. Users can experience smoother connectivity, clearer call quality on calling applications, and seamless switching between Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

Notably, the X85 is also equipped with outstanding features such as 3CC + 1CC Turbo DSDA (Dual SIM Dual Active) support, allowing simultaneous use of two SIMs with high performance. Downlink carrier aggregation with 400MHz bandwidth in the Sub-6GHz band with 1024 quadrature amplitude modulation (1024 QAM), increasing data transmission speed and efficiency. Uplink speed reaches 3.7Gbps thanks to 4-layer uplink carrier aggregation, meeting the need for continuous high-performance data transmission.
All of these upgrades allow the X85 modem to deliver higher performance, lower latency, wider signal range, and greater power efficiency to mobile devices. The Qualcomm X85 modem is currently being tested by device manufacturers and is expected to first appear in devices sold later this year.
