What is a supermoon?
A “supermoon” occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon’s closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, a point called perigee. During each 27-day orbit around Earth, the moon reaches both its perigee, or closest point, about 226,000 miles (363,300 km), and its farthest point, or apogee, about 251,000 miles (405,500 km) from Earth. Because the moon’s orbit fluctuates and varies depending on the positions of the sun and Earth in their orbits, the exact distances of these closest and farthest points vary, and some supermoons are closer or farther away than others. “Supermoon” is not an official astronomical term, but is often used to describe a full moon that falls within at least 90 percent of its perigee.
Supermoons only occur three to four times a year, and they always occur back to back. For most of Earth's orbit around the sun, the perigee and full moons do not overlap.
