Users Can Pause Apple Intelligences Problematic Notification Summaries in the Next iOS Update

One of Apple's flagship Intelligence features , notification summaries, had a disappointing launch, sometimes providing inaccurate information. But in the upcoming iOS update, Apple has made some significant changes.

Users can completely turn off Notification Summary

The changes are already in the latest beta of iOS 18.3 . Spotted by 9to5Mac, here are all the tweaks to Apple Intelligence's notification summary:

  • When you enable notification summaries, iOS 18.3 makes it clearer that this feature—like all Apple Intelligence features—is in beta.
  • You can now turn off notification summaries for an app directly from the Lock Screen or Notification Center by swiping in, tapping "Options," then selecting the "Turn Off Summaries" option.
  • On the Lock screen, notification summaries now use italicized text to better distinguish them from regular notifications.
  • In the Settings app, Apple now warns users that notification summaries “may contain errors.”

Additionally, notification summaries have been temporarily disabled entirely for the News & Entertainment app category. Notification summaries will be re-enabled for this category with a future software update as Apple continues to improve the experience.

Notification summaries were one of the first features added to Apple Intelligence in October 2024. As the name suggests, the AI reads many of your notifications and provides easy-to-understand summaries.

But the feature is sometimes prone to error. The BBC complained about it in December 2024 after an incident. A briefing from the channel incorrectly stated that Luigi Mangione had shot himself. Mangione is the man accused of shooting healthcare company CEO Brian Thompson.

There's no word on when iOS 18.3 will officially be released to the public, and there may be more betas to come.

Apple Intelligence: A Work in Progress

A breakdown of Apple Intelligence Notification Summary.

While many people like the notification summary feature, it’s unfortunately still very buggy, especially with regular notifications from news apps. In the example above, from the ESPN app, the summary says that a basketball game in Texas has been postponed due to wildfires in Los Angeles. However, that’s not the case.

It's nice that Apple gives users the ability to turn this feature off completely if they want, and it's more clear when the notification is summarized by Apple Intelligence.
