Learning your and your partner's love languages can be a great way to create a meaningful connection between the two of you. Here's what you need to know about the 5 love languages .
You may express your affection to your significant other on a regular basis, but do you really take the time to make sure you're communicating your affection in a way that your partner wants to receive? Even love can sometimes get lost in the communication process when two people speak different love languages.
What are the 5 love languages?
The 5 love languages are five different ways of expressing and receiving love: words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, thoughtful attention, and physical touch. Not everyone communicates love in the same way, and similarly, people have different ways they like to receive love. The concept of love languages was developed by Gary Chapman in his book The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts, in which he describes these five unique styles of communicating love, categories he distilled from his experience in marriage counseling and linguistics.
Here's an overview of each of the love languages Chapman describes:
Words of love
“Words of Affirmation” is about showing affection through words, compliments, or appreciation. When this is a person’s primary love language, they enjoy kind and encouraging words, uplifting quotes, loving notes, and cute texts. You can make this person’s day better by complimenting them or pointing out things they do well.
Quality Time
People with this love language value your full presence when you are together. They feel most loved if you give them your full attention and spend time together in meaningful, interactive ways. This means putting down your phone, turning off your computer, making eye contact, interacting thoughtfully, and listening actively.
Body contact
A person who wants physical contact as their primary love language feels loved through physical affection. For example, in addition to sex, they feel loved when their partner holds their hand, touches their arm, or gives them a massage at the end of the day, for example.
This person's idea of a great date night might be cuddling on the couch while watching a movie, slow dancing together with lots of physical contact, or taking a hike together while holding hands. They feel most loved when they are physically interacting with their partner.
Thoughtfulness
Acts of service are nice things you do for your partner that make them feel loved and appreciated, such as:
If your partner's primary love language is acts of service, they will notice and appreciate the little things you do for them. They also tend to perform acts of service and kindness for others.
Present
For people who speak this love language, gifts represent love, care, and affection. They appreciate not only the gift itself, but also the time and effort the giver put into choosing it.
People who enjoy receiving gifts as part of their primary love language don't necessarily expect big or expensive gifts; what's more important is the effort and thoughtfulness behind the gift.
When you take the time to choose a gift that is personal to them, it shows them that you are thoughtful and truly understand and care about them and their interests. People who speak this love language can often remember every little gift they receive from their loved ones because it makes a big impact on them.
Comparison table of 5 love languages
Language of love | Expression | This may be your love language if | If your lover prefers this love language |
Affirmation of love | Verbal expressions of love, appreciation and encouragement | You like to hear " I love you " often, you feel happy when encouraged by others. | Say things that mean more than just "I love you," "thank you," "you matter to me," and the like. |
Quality Time | Give others your undivided attention | You spend time with others, you feel disconnected when you don't spend enough time together. | Make time for each other and do meaningful things together. |
Physical contact | Connect through appropriate physical contact (not sexual) | You are a “touchy” person, you feel most loved when you are hugged or touched. | Hold hands, be generous with affection and other public displays, and prioritize sex if it's important in the relationship. |
attentive care | Selfless, thoughtful acts make a person's life easier | You will be happy when someone helps you without you asking, actions speak louder than words. | Cooking, helping with housework... |
Present | Visible signs of love and care | You pride yourself on giving thoughtful gifts, you appreciate meaningful gifts. | Surprise them with gifts outside of special occasions, bring home their favorite food, buy or make personalized gifts. |
According to Chapman, love languages also apply to relationships between parents and children, and between coworkers and friends. For example, if your child's primary love language is affirmation, they want to hear verbal praise or "I love you."
Your love language can also change from time to time. For example, if you had a bad day at work, you might prefer a hug from your partner over a word of encouragement.
The key here is to communicate regularly and ask your partner what they need to feel appreciated, heard, and loved. Once you’ve checked in, you can take what you’ve learned and put it into practice.
Once you and your partner know each other's love languages , you can both benefit. Remember, healthy relationships don't just happen; they're developed through attention and effort.
The good news is that you can improve your relationship by learning your partner’s love languages and then putting them into practice. And if you both commit to loving each other in your own unique way, you’ll find yourself not only loving more deeply, but also having a more meaningful and fulfilling relationship.
