The bloody Squid Game competition has taken almost everything from the main character, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), except his life. His mother (Kim Young-ok) died the first time he entered the competition. In order for Gi-hun to win the squid game in Part 1, his friend Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo) had to die. However, it wasn't until the final scene of Squid Game Part 2 that viewers saw Gi-hun at his lowest point. The character ended Episode 7 crying on the ground, looking into the lifeless eyes of his deceased best friend, Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), who had just been murdered by Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). To make matters worse, Gi-hun had no idea that Front Man was actually Young-il, the player Gi-hun thought was one of his closest allies in the Squid Game .
“The ending of Squid Game Part 2 will make people more curious about what Gi-hun will do in the game after this traumatic event happens to him,” Lee Jung-jae told Tudum. “After what happened to his friend, will he be able to continue his goal of saving others in the game?”
And Lee Jung-jae, along with co-star Lee Byung-hun and Squid Game creator, director & writer Hwang Dong-hyuk, are ready to answer those burning questions. Here are the details on Squid Game 2's biggest mysteries.
Decode the mystery and ending in the Squid Game part 2
In Part 1, Gi-hun learns that his ally Player 001—aka Oh Il-nam (Oh Young-su)—is not who he claims to be at all. Il-nam was never a down-on-his-luck, money-hungry old man—he's the wealthy heir to the Squid Game.
And unbeknownst to Gi-hun, a similar deception is taking place in Squid Game Part 2. When Gi-hun decides to return to the game, Front Man also chooses to play. He takes over the title of Player 001 and becomes "Young-il." Lee Byung-hun, who plays Front Man, told Tudum that his character joins the game to resolve some fundamental ideological differences between him and Gi-hun. Front Man is " someone who believes there is absolutely no hope for the world or humanity ," while Gi-hun hopes for the best for society.
“ It's almost like they're betting with each other ,” Lee Byung-hun said. “ The leader is asking questions like, 'Do you really think you'll be able to finish the game? Do you really think there's hope for humanity? Do you think the world will change? '”
Lee Byung-hun said that the conflict between the two characters is the focus of Squid Game 2.
Although Front Man uses a fake identity, Young-il's personality is heavily influenced by his own life. Before becoming Front Man, he was In-ho, a police officer who loved his wife. But she died of acute cirrhosis.
In the first four episodes of Squid Game Season 2, viewers get a better understanding of Front Man's wife's death. As Front Man tells Gi-hun under the guise of Young-il, his wife's cirrhosis eventually became so severe that she needed a liver transplant. As the couple sought treatment, Front Man and his wife also learned that she was pregnant. Although doctors advised her to terminate the pregnancy, she was determined to give birth, despite the danger. The couple struggled to find a liver donor, and her condition worsened. So Front Man borrowed as much money as he could, eventually accepting a loan from someone he shouldn't have. Front Man's superiors considered the money a bribe and fired him despite his years of dedication to his job.
A conversation between Jun-ho and his mother—Front Man's stepmother—further explains the family history. Years before Front Man's wife was diagnosed with the disease, he donated his kidney to Jun-ho. As a result, when his wife became ill, Front Man was unable to sell his kidney to pay for her treatment. The family was also going through a difficult financial time, so Jun-ho and his mother were unable to help pay the bills. In the years that followed, Front Man avoided his family, not even visiting his wife's grave.
These details helped Lee Byung-hun portray Front Man. When preparing for Squid Game 2, he had many conversations with Hwang. " I would ask questions like, 'Why is he acting this way? Why is he saying these things? And how much complexity do I want to show in the character? ' " he explained.
Lee Byung-hun shared about taking on the roles of Front Man, In-ho, and Young-il: " For me, having to express different nuances for each of these three aspects was the biggest challenge - as well as the most fun - as an actor ."
In Episode 1 and Episode 2 of the new Squid Game, we meet No-eul (Park Gyu-young), a mysterious woman who seems like the perfect candidate to play the Squid Game. But, the ending of Episode 2 shockingly reveals, No-eul is not a player. She is a pink guard and a professional sniper.
Part 2 gives us some details about No-eul's past. She is a North Korean defector who left her family — including her daughter — behind. “ [No-eul] has no other purpose in life than to reunite with her child, ” Park says. “ [She] is hiding pain that cannot be expressed in words .”
Although No-eul may seem like nothing more than a mercenary, she is not. “ No-eul started working in the game with the mission of letting desperate people die peacefully without pain. She is someone who cannot continue living but must live ,” Park said… “ She joined the game with the idea of easing the pain of others and bringing peace to those who suffer like herself .”
At the beginning of Part 2, Gi-hun teams up with Detective Jun-ho to try to destroy the Squid Game. They plan to stay in touch via a tracking device that Gi-hun implants in a fake tooth, but they lose track of each other when Gi-hun is taken back to the arena. (The thing is, they didn't plan for security to discover the tracking device and destroy it, but that's exactly what happens.) The tracking device is eventually found—not on the island, but mixed in with a pile of fishing bait. (Apparently, someone gave a fisherman a bag of leftover worms, which hid the tracking device.)
But Jun-ho doesn't give up, and he and his hired men continue to search from their boat. While Jun-ho thinks he's surrounded by friends (or at least loyal employees), the ending reveals that something sinister is going on aboard the ship—and the trouble starts with the helmsman. In the middle of the night, one of the men on the boat spots the captain fiddling with a drone being used to search for the island. When the man starts asking questions, Captain Park stabs him and throws him overboard. The captain then pretends nothing happened and blames the waves for the disturbance.
The twists and turns of Squid Game are clearly not limited to the competition. You can expect the film to reveal more secrets surrounding the story when Squid Game Part 3 comes out next year.
The end of Squid Game 2 escalates into an armed rebellion between Gi-hun and some of his fellow players and the game's operators. Gi-hun's best friend Jung-bae—along with many other players—suffer collateral damage, as Gi-hun is unaware that Young-il is actually Front Man. As the rebellion begins, the players think they have a chance to win, possibly taking control of the Squid Game arena.
But the game is not designed for the player to win, and Front Man ensures the rebellion will fail. After separating from the group, he kills two rebels and fakes his own death. He then switches his radio to a protective frequency, and tells his group to finish putting down the rebellion. They do so. By the time Gi-hun and Jung-bae surrender, Front Man has shed his Player 001 tracksuit for his usual black cloak and mask.
Front Man takes this opportunity to prove to Gi-hun that his "little hero game" is ultimately a futile game. He shoots & kills Jung-bae. This way, he can finally teach Gi-hun that there really is no hope left in this world. Knowing that Gi-hun will have to live with that lesson appeals to Front Man much more than just killing Gi-hun. Death is too easy an escape.
" The audience will definitely be shocked and sad to see Jung-bae go ," said Hwang. The creator of Squid Game sees Jung-bae as someone who shares the same optimism and warm heart that Gi-hun once had but has now lost. " He is also the only person in the game that Gi-hun can trust and rely on completely ."
Hwang thought that Jung-bae's tragic loss would be the perfect place to end Squid Game Part 2. Lee Jung-jae believed that Jung-bae's death would fundamentally change the previously hopeful protagonist of Squid Game.
“ How much pain can a person endure to achieve his goal? ” Lee Jung-jae asked. “ Is the determination he had at first still intact? Does he still have that feeling inside him? Because now his best friend is dead. ”
Gi-hun's fatal encounter with Front Man at the end of the season was also his most honest conversation with his friend Young-il. However, Lee Jung-jae said, "I don't think Gi-hun knows the truth." He was unable to realize Front Man's betrayal because he was too busy "blaming himself for everything that happened."
Hwang doesn't exactly classify Front Man's actions as a true "betrayal." " Because that was his intention and his plan from the beginning, " the writer said. "That moment is really the climax of Season 2. Front Man starts the new season with his mask on, but then comes back to himself and ends with his mask off. "
The final moments of Squid Game 2 put Gi-hun in his darkest place yet. His allies and friends were murdered in the rebellion. His dream of overthrowing the guards seemed to be dead too. “ And now, his best friend is gone, ” says Lee Jung-jae. “He’s had everything taken away. He’s lost everything he had.”
Director Hwang said this was a pivotal moment for Gi-hun. "You realize that Gi-hun's attempts to end the game have failed—in two ways," he explained. First, he fails to convince the other players to stop the Squid Game through a vote. Then, Gi-hun " fails to use physical force against the people who are organizing the game ."
But the Squid Game creator is excited for viewers to see how far this “deep state of despair” pushes Gi-hun. “ Does he still believe he can convince the others and leave together or end the game? ” Hwang asks. “ Or will he give up and become a completely different person? Someone like Front Man who thinks, ‘What can I change?’ ”
These questions set up the story for Squid Game 3, which Hwang calls “the second chapter of the confrontation between Gi-hun and Front Man.”
