What is a flagship? When is a smartphone called a flagship?

"Flagship" is a term that originated in the 18th century, originating from the maritime field to refer to the largest, fastest, most powerful ships equipped with the most modern weapons, carrying the leading commanding officer of a fleet. Or simply put, Flagship refers to a ship carrying the admiral's flag, symbolizing power and supreme position in the fleet.

What is a "flagship" smartphone?

In the smartphone industry, the term "flagship" does not have a fixed definition but is often relative, referring to the top and most prominent products of a brand.

For example, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is packed with cutting-edge technology and outstanding features, often considered a "flagship" smartphone. But compared to the Galaxy A series, any model in the Galaxy S series can be considered a flagship due to its superior quality and features.

For Apple, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is identified as the "flagship" iPhone thanks to its most superior features.

When a smartphone is called a “flagship,” it means that it is the best product that the company has to offer. These phones have outstanding performance, showing class and innovation in the technology industry.

Thus, "flagship" also reflects competition and innovation in the smartphone industry, where brands are constantly striving to bring the best products to consumers.

Widespread popularity

However, the concept of "flagship" is now widely applied in many different industries, not just limited to the smartphone sector. This term often refers to the main products that represent the brand, demonstrate the company's excellence and contribute to shaping the brand's reputation.

For example, Microsoft is known for its flagship products like Windows and Office, while Adobe is known for Photoshop.

In broadcasting, a network's main broadcast station, such as WCBS in New York representing CBS on the US East Coast, is considered the "flagship" channel.
