What is Google AI Studio?
Google's AI Studio is an all-in-one web platform that allows developers to build and experiment with a variety of Google's large language models (LLMs), powered by Gemini. If you've heard of Gemini, Google's competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT, then you're halfway to understanding what AI Studio is.
While the platform is aimed at developers building products using various APIs from Google's Gemini LLM, the web-based nature of AI Studio means you don't need to be a developer to experience its great features.
AI Studio has a number of features available, including the ability to ask questions and tweak your AI model. It also has a unique feature called Realtime Stream that allows you to interact directly with Gemini in a variety of ways, including text, voice, video, and even screen sharing. This feature makes AI Studio one of the many essential AI tools that students should have.
Use Google's AI Studio as a learning tutor
The main feature used to turn AI Studio into a learning tutor is Realtime Stream. With the ability to interact live, using Realtime Stream to learn is like having an expert right next to you. To get started, select Realtime Stream on the left tab of AI Studio.
When you select this tab, AI Studio offers three main options: Talk to Gemini, show Gemini what you’re looking at via webcam, or share your screen. Of course, you can also type something into the chat for text interactions, but sharing your screen makes the experience more interactive and personalized, which is important for learning.
Let’s say you want to learn how to do simple calculations in Google Sheets. First, you’ll open a spreadsheet with sample data in Google Sheets in another tab. Then, you’ll select the Share your screen option in the Stream Realtime tab . Then, choose the appropriate option to share: tab, window, or entire screen. Also, make sure you give Gemini access to your microphone for audio input. Then, open the Google Sheets tab.
Once done, confirm that Gemini can see your screen by talking directly to the device. Once confirmed, you can ask Gemini anything you need help with in the spreadsheet and it will walk you through it step by step.
For example, you can see Gemini confirming that it can see the screen above and is even smart enough to know that a spreadsheet is open.
You can then ask Gemini anything you want to do in the spreadsheet and it will guide you through it like an expert is sitting right next to you. While you can already use Gemini in Google Sheets, AI Studio is better built-in. The only downside at the time of writing is that Google limits sessions to 10 minutes, which may be restrictive depending on what you need help with.
AI Studio is a great tool for both study and work
The example above of learning how to do calculations in Google Sheets is just one example. The fact that AI Studio can see your screen means it can help you do almost anything. For example, if you do accounting, you could use some help from AI Studio to guide you through some tasks.
If you’re a student, AI Studio’s live interaction feature can help you understand scientific papers more easily and even improve your presentation skills. All you have to do is share what you’re doing using Stream Realtime’s screen sharing feature and Gemini will help you with just about anything you might need help with on your device.
