How to Set Up and Use Miracast on Windows 10

Have you thought of watching your favorite movies on your LCD screen by playing the video from your computer or phone? It is now possible even without a cable, ever since the Wi-Fi Alliance launched Miracast a few years ago. With Miracast, a video played on a computer can be viewed on another device, TV, or computer. It is also called “HDMI over Wi-Fi.” This article is about Miracast, the way to set up Miracast on Windows 10 and fix errors or problems related to it.

What is Miracast

Miracast is a standard for wireless technology. It connects a PC, laptop, tablet, or smartphone to another display device such as TV, monitor, or projector. It was first included in Windows 8.1, and now most devices or systems come with it built-in.

Using Miracast, you can mirror the screen of a PC or laptop onto a TV screen or into a projector without any cable connection. In this way, upto 1080p HD videos and 5.1 surround sound can be transmitted, which is more than sufficient for in-house purposes.

How to Check If Miracast is Supported on Your Device or Not?

Many devices have built Miracast. You should verify that your device supports it. To do so, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Open Run dialogue box by pressing Windows key + R, then type “dxdialog” and press Enter.

Step 2: Select the “Save all information” option, and save the file in a location of your choice.

Step 3: Now navigate to the dxdiag.txt file, open it, and check the status of Miracast. If it supports, “Available” will be written next to it

Set Up and Use Miracast on Windows 10

If it supports your device, set up Miracast to use it. Follow the instructions below:

Step 1: Turn on your TV or any other display device you want to use. If it does not have Miracast support built-in, connect a display adapter into its HDMI port.

Step 2: Now, on your PC, go to Settings.

Step 3: In Settings, select Devices option.

Step 4: In the Devices section, click on “Add Bluetooth or other devices.” Then select your TV (or the adapter, if the TV has no in-built Miracast support) among the available devices.

Step 5: Once you have connected your Windows PC and TV, configure them by pressing Windows + P, and selecting any one of the given options.

Thus, it connects your display devices via Miracast.

Miracast Not Working in Windows 10

Although Windows 10 ideally supports Miracast, you may face an error while trying to use it. A “not supported” message may appear, or the video on the receiving device may have no sound. It may be due to outdated drivers, or an incompatible adapter. In such a case, try the solutions below:

Solution 1: Update Drivers

The connection may not work due to outdated drivers. Go to your computer’s Device Manager (Windows + X, then select Device Manager), and check if the display and wireless drivers are up to date. If not, update them using a Driver Update Utility Program (install them from online).

Solution 2: Use New Adapter

Since various companies produce display adapters, but all models may not be compatible with your device or system. Try using another adapter. The best option is to use the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter.
