Swimming pools, rivers, lakes are ideal places for a hot summer. But these are also areas with a potential risk of drowning death in children.
Just a few minutes into the pool, the boy suddenly died from drowning
In these days, the weather pattern that is popular in all three regions of the North, Central, and South is intense heat and low humidity.
Therefore, many parents choose the swimming pool to relieve the "thirst" for children.
This is partly true! Because ponds, lakes, rivers and streams are often more dangerous for children to swim during days.
However, even when going to the swimming pool, the babies are not absolutely safe, because there is still a risk of death from drowning.
Motionless in the swimming pool
Swimming pools also pose a high risk of drowning death
Last weekend, the weather was extremely hot, the temperature in many places reached more than 40 degrees Celsius.
With swimming pool available, Gia Binh Town Secondary School, Bac Ninh Province organized swimming lessons for 7B students from 14:30 to 16:00. This is a daily activity of the school to help students improve their life skills.
At this time, a woman from the outside with 3 young children asked to swim freely, including 2 children about 4-6 years old and L, 11 years old.
The story will stop here, if there is no unusual phenomenon from L.
Just a few minutes after going into the pool in hot weather, people discovered that L stood still under the pool in an abnormal state.
L was immediately brought ashore and performed on-site first aid. Next, the teachers in the school and relatives took her to the Gia Binh district hospital for emergency.
Suspected of being drowned
Unskilled children are susceptible to drowning
At Gia Binh district hospital, L was actively treated by doctors but was not successful.
Realizing that her condition was getting worse and worse, the doctors continued to transfer her to the General Hospital of Bac Ninh province, and then to the National Hospital of Pediatrics (Hanoi).
At 8:00 p.m. on the same day, the doctors at the National Hospital of Pediatrics diagnosed L in a critical condition. Her family then took me home to take care of the story.
Immediately after the above heartbreaking incident, the Chairman of Bac Ninh Provincial People's Committee issued an express document instructing the Provincial Police to preside over and coordinate with the Gia Binh District People's Committee to urgently investigate and verify the cause of the incident.
This incident also raised a lot of concern for parents about accidents and deaths due to drowning in children this unusual summer.
Viet Nam is among the top Southeast Asian countries in child drowning mortality
Drowning accidents are often very tragic
According to Dr. Ta Anh Tuan, Department of Emergency Recovery, Central Pediatric Hospital, drowning accidents take place all year round. However, summer is always the peak period.
“Children who drown can suffocate, leading to rapid death. In the case of timely emergency, the child can go through a critical crisis but lead to serious complications such as: respiratory failure, pneumonia, or sequelae of brain damage due to prolonged lack of oxygen ", Dr. Ta Anh Tuan Canh newspaper.
Signs of drowning: 3 stages
- Begins to sink: Time depends on fitness, training level, psychological factors ...
- Inhalation of water: The larynx has a spasmodic reaction, at this time the lungs are still dry, often swallowing water sips, possibly accompanied by vomiting, causing asphyxiation.
- Lack of oxygen: Due to increased oxygen consumption, airways are overflowed, lung tissue is damaged, reducing diffusion area ...
Symptom
- Shortness of breath
Pain behind the sternum
- Increased secretion of bloody sputum
- Fast, shallow breathing
- Cyanosis
- Acute respiratory failure
Loss of consciousness
- Convulsions
- Brain edema due to lack of brain oxygen.
Survival can also leave sequelae in the central nervous system such as memory loss and extrapyramidal dysfunction.
Drowning (Secondary drowning)
Drowning on land is equally dangerous!
According to TS. Dr. Vu Duc Dinh (Hospital E, Hanoi), just a little water can cause secondary drowning. Therefore, if you see swimmers fall into the water, almost drown, or choke or swallow too much water (especially children), your loved one should pay attention. If the following signs are detected within 1 - 72 hours:
Excessive fatigue after bathing.
- Feeling short of breath after bathing.
Outsiders may notice sudden discomfort, changes in mood (irritability, aggression for no apparent reason).
- Severe cough, abnormally exhausted, unusual behavior related to brain function (stuttering, sluggishness, lack of awareness ...)
Within 72 hours of almost drowning, or swimming back if symptoms such as headache, chest tightness, purple, rapid pulse, difficulty breathing ... need first aid and call 115, or get emergency medical care early .
Give first aid to drowning victims
The golden time to rescue drowning victims is 1-5 minutes after picking up
- Quickly pull the victim out of the water
- Make water drain out of lungs and stomach.
- Pick up the victim, head below, legs on the shoulders of the rescuer, the rescuer is running and jumping.
- Let casualty lay up, low head pull out the phlegm from the oropharynx.
- If the heart stops, stops breathing, must quickly breathe asphyxiant and massage the heart outside the chest until breathing returns and has pulse.
- Must persevere in first aid until the victim can breathe, have pulse, dilated pupils, pink mucous skin returns or the victim shows signs of real death (hard body, cold, dilated pupils ... ).
- If victim is still breathing, heart is still beating: Dry, incubate, drink tea with sugar, support heart, support breathing.
Death from drowning is something no one wants. Hopefully, the above analysis from experts will help families limit the situation of "the first to send off the green head".
