Windows 11 Market Share Is Quickly Catching Up to Windows 10
Statistics website Statcounter has just officially published its monthly report, revealing the latest detailed information about the market share of Windows operating system versions running globally.
Microsoft no longer publishes official statistics on Windows operating system market share, so third-party services like Statcounter are the only way to know what's going on with the Windows market. According to the latest statistics, Windows 11 is becoming more popular as Windows 10 nears the end of support.
According to the latest data released by Statcounter, Windows 11 made a significant jump in March 2025. On the contrary, Windows 10 lost a large number of users in just one month. As of now, Windows 10 accounts for 54.23% of all Windows PCs globally, down 4.43% . Meanwhile, Windows 11 reached 42.66% - an all-time high with an increase of 4.53% (this is the biggest jump in 3 years).
In terms of year-over-year difference, Windows 11 increases by +15.98% (in March 2024, this figure is 26.68% ), while Windows 10 decreases by -14.84% ( 69.07% in March 2024).
It’s exciting that Windows 11 has caught up so quickly to its predecessor, but Microsoft still has a lot of work to do to transition the remaining Windows 10 users. Some will move to Windows 11 naturally, while others will be forced to “stick” with the old operating system for a variety of reasons: unable to officially upgrade due to outdated hardware (by Microsoft’s standards), or still skeptical of Windows 11’s controversial changes and design choices.
With Windows 10, Microsoft is making Extended Security Updates available to consumers for the first time (previously only to business customers). This is also why Windows 10 is expected to last for a while. Currently, Microsoft plans to only provide extended security updates to consumers for 1 year.
While the “war” between Windows 10 and 11 is going on, the market share of the remaining Windows versions is almost unchanged. These older versions of Windows have long been out of support, but there is still a large number of users who refuse to switch to the new operating system, as follows:
Windows 10: 54.23% (-4.43%)
Windows 11: 42.66% (+4.53%)
Windows 7: 2.22% (+0.08%)
Windows XP: 0.33% (+0.04%)
Windows 8.1: 0.28% (+0.02%)
The market could see a significant shake-up after October 2025, as analysts predict more users will upgrade their PCs after Windows 10 is no longer supported for free.
