Apple is aiming to improve the iPhone’s AI capabilities and experience with iOS 18. To achieve that goal, the Cupertino company is actively negotiating with industry leaders like OpenAI and Google to come up with a deal to integrate these companies’ popular AI tools into the next version of iOS. Recently, Apple journalist Mark Gurman revealed that Apple is close to reaching a deal with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to the iPhone.
Apple is trying to add a bunch of AI features in the next version of iOS
According to Bloomberg, Apple is very close to finalizing a deal with OpenAI. While it is not yet clear how ChatGPT will be implemented, the deal will essentially allow Apple to integrate a series of useful AI features into iOS 18.
Talks with OpenAI are progressing well, according to people familiar with Apple’s thinking. The company is also looking to strike deals with other AI companies along the way. Bloomberg reports that Apple and Google are also in talks to license the Gemini chatbot for iOS. However, no agreement has been reached between the two companies. Apple is likely looking for the best deal in terms of cost.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has previously said that he personally appreciates and often uses ChatGPT, but the CEO has also highlighted a number of concerns that need to be addressed before implementing such technology into the Apple ecosystem.
Meanwhile, recent rumors suggest that iOS 18 will include AI transcription and summarization, which will be a major benefit in apps like Notes and Voice Memos, and is expected to appear in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15.
Bringing AI power to Apple’s ecosystem is just a matter of time. Given the progress that competitors have made, such as Microsoft with Copilot and Google with Gemini, Apple certainly can’t wait any longer.

Apple has significantly increased its investment in artificial intelligence (AI) over the past few months, focusing primarily on conversational AI models, automation, and multimodal systems.
Earlier in July, rumors emerged that Apple was working on new tools and services that leverage Generative Artificial Intelligence technology to compete with services from major rivals such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and many others. This information sent Apple’s stock up 2%, to a record high.
There is also a debate within Apple about how to deliver AI services, with some arguing that they should be available locally on devices like the iPhone, while others want to move everything to the cloud and support a hybrid solution.
Whatever the decision, it seems clear that Apple is trying to catch up with Microsoft and Google in this area. But with its usual cautious approach, experts say that Apple's fall behind in AI is entirely possible.
The company is expected to introduce more generative AI- based features with iOS 18 and other software updates announced in June at WWDC 2024. Apple has also developed its own language models that can run offline . However, these models are more limited, so using online alternatives would be ideal to provide more accurate results.
