Male infertility - Men, beware: Using a wireless device with a cell phone can affect fertility if you place the phone near your testes, researchers The Cleveland Clinic warns in the journal Fertility and Sterility.
Men who use these wireless devices tend to carry their cell phones in their pockets or clip them to their waist when in talk mode. As a result, radio frequency electromagnetic waves can come into contact with the testicles, said Dr. Ashok Agarwal, head of the lab and director of the Center for Reproductive Medicine at the Glologman Urologoical and Kidney Institute in Ohio.
"Bluetooth devices, which many people use today because of health or safety concerns, may not always be safe. There is always a downside," he said.
Cell phone radiation affects sperm quality
To arrive at their results, the researchers collected semen samples from 32 men and divided each person's sample into two parts. They placed half of the semen samples 850 MHz away from a cell phone 850 MHz in talk mode for an hour.
Most cell phones used in the United States are 850-900 MHz. They chose this distance because it is the typical distance between the testicles and the pockets of the pants.
Previous research from the same group showed that radio-frequency electromagnetic waves emitted from cell phones could decrease sperm quality, and new research shows why this could happen.
Semen exposed to radio frequency electromagnetic waves emitted by cell phones have harmful levels, lower sperm motility (their ability to move and swim), and their viability spermatozoa (survival rate of spermatozoa) and may be more oxidized. There was no significant difference in DNA damage between the study exposure and the non-exposure groups.
"Our findings seem to be consistent with other findings that environmental factors such as toxins, pollutants and materials used in farming are the cause of male infertility," says researchers. said Agarwal.
Laptop phone should be placed on lap and phone in pocket
More research is needed to confirm the findings. "We will also test the effect [of radio frequency electromagnetic waves emitted by cell phones] at other distances," he said. "We know radiation degrades sperm quality by 2.5 centimeters, but we don't know if the effect will continue at 3, 4 or 5 centimeters," he said.
Future studies will determine whether there are dangerous emissions when the phone is in silent mode or in standby mode.
"The emission may be smaller than when in talk mode, but it can still harm the testicles," he said.
It's not just cell phones. Other factors can also affect male infertility, he said. "Men should not put their laptop on their lap because the heat from the battery can also affect sperm," he told WebMD. "Jacuzzi, tub bath, toxins and smoke can all play a role in male infertility and should be discussed."
Under the mechanism proposed by the new study, antioxidants like vitamins C and E may help reverse oxidative stress in sperm. Doctors recommend all of their male patients take certain antioxidants even if their sperm is normal.
