Unlike professional photo editing software like Photoshop, Canva is extremely easy to use, even for people with no design experience. When creating an Instagram post or Story, you can choose from hundreds of templates that Canva offers. It has a free image collection that you can drag & drop into the template or upload your own work. Once you're satisfied with the final creation, you can download or post it directly to Instagram from the mobile app.
How to use Canva to increase Instagram appeal
Create posts with inspirational quotes
With posts like this, the poster hopes to motivate, inspire or share advice with someone. By typing “quote” in the search box of the Templates tab in Canva, you will get a series of options where you can enter your favorite quotes.
All elements in this template are editable, including font style, text size, images, and borders.
Collage
Sometimes a photo is not enough to convey all the messages you want to say, so it is not attractive enough to viewers. If you want to include multiple photos in one frame, Canva has several options for you.
You'll find tons of options in the Elements section . A composite frame can include 12 photos. Each photo in a different size can create a beautiful collage.
Another option is on the Templates tab . You can search for collage, grid or any keyword you think is suitable. The benefit of collage templates is that they are more creative, allowing you to add text, background color, and tell a story in the way you choose to arrange your photos.
Add photos in order to Stories
Most of Canva's design choices for regular Instagram posts can be applied to Stories. They include creative templates with text and images, collages and grids. However, to make your Story more interesting, you may want to post a series of photos in order.
When you hover over the Story template, you will see that some of them say Free, others may say “1 of X”. Click on the desired template and you will see that all pages include that template. You can use as many of them as you like.
Each page is designed differently but shares the same theme throughout. This helps you convey an idea or a set of photos in a Story, turning it into a cohesive post. The entire page can be posted in one go via the mobile app.
Create custom highlight covers
Have you ever seen Instagram profiles with unique Highlight cover images? They often let you know what content you're about to see about fashion, food, pets, etc. With Canva, you can create your own outstanding cover image.
This option is available in the Templates tab. Type in Instagram Story Highlight Covers and you'll get tons of gorgeous options. In particular, some options also offer different Highlight cover image variations that you can have on your personal feed.
If you can't see the cover image you want, you can create your own on a blank template. Just add a circle in the middle, then browse through the rest of the Elements library to place an image on top.
Neatly organized quizzes and questions
When you want to include a question, vote or quiz sticker in your Story, so they don't get bored, Canva has an option for you. Again, search for quiz, poll or question in Templates and select the item you like.
Most templates have a separate place to insert stickers. Canva also offers different types of quizzes for you to choose from.
Animate stories and posts
This is actually one of Canva's most popular features. Almost everything mentioned above can be animated.
At the top of Canva's editor, you'll see an Animate button. The free version allows you to choose from 6 options to make images and text appear slowly on the screen, creating a more dynamic article.
Another option is the Videos tab on the left side of the screen. It contains short videos. You can include them in background templates or inside a photo collage, creating eye-catching posts. Of course, you can also upload personal videos. Canva also allows you to add music.
You can also type the keyword “animated social media” into the search bar in the Templates section. Canva will then display a series of templates, all with animated elements that you can customize to your liking.
