What is the method of transvaginal ultrasound?

Why doctors appoint ultrasound probes 5 weeks old?

What will you see when the doctor takes a 5-week pregnancy scan?

Don't worry if you can't see your baby! The embryo is now just the size of pepper - about 2 mm.

At this stage, the only things a woman can see are the yolk sac and the fetal sac. Do not worried! Usually an ultrasound doctor will help point out the embryo. At this point, the image of the embryo may be a curled, small white object.

What if nothing shows up on a 5-week pregnancy probe ultrasound?

Patience is key during pregnancy, especially early. Some women can go for an ultrasound for 5 weeks and get back just no presence of a pregnancy sac.

There are several possibilities for why a pregnancy sac was not present on a 5-week pregnancy probe ultrasound.

Ultrasound is too early

One possibility is that the mother's incorrect determination of the last day of her period leads to a mismatch in the gestational age calculation. This confusion is quite common and is related to the level of hCG confirming pregnancy from the urine on a pregnancy test.

A pregnant woman's hCG level should be between 1,500 and 2,000 at 5 weeks of pregnancy, but it may be difficult to see anything until the hCG exceeds 2,000.

Ectopic pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy may be the reason why the doctor won't see anything during the 5-week scan. This is less common than being incorrectly dated and can be life-threatening if left undetected and treated.

This happens when a fertilized egg implants and develops, but is located on the outside of the uterus. These pregnancies need treatment and can cause heavy bleeding inside the abdomen. Most ectopic pregnancies happen in the fallopian tubes.

Miscarriage

Decreased hCG levels and an inability to find a pregnancy sac can also lead to an early miscarriage. A miscarriage occurs when a fertilized egg does not form properly to form an embryo.

Vaginal bleeding is a common miscarriage, but it's not the only symptom. There are many different possibilities associated with vaginal bleeding during pregnancy.
