5 things Pro users may have to give up to switch to iPhone 17 Air
The rumored iPhone 17 Air coming next year has a good chance of luring users away from the Pro models.
The iPhone 16 series is still a few months away , and rumors about the iPhone 17 have already started to emerge. The latest report from The Information is shaping up to be a major upgrade for the 2025 iPhones. It seems Apple is taking a cue from its latest thinnest product, the M4 iPad Pro.
After iPad Pro, iPhone 17 will have a "significantly thinner" design
The report says Apple is planning to release a brand new model in the iPhone 17 series that will be “significantly thinner” than the other models and will be more expensive than the Pro Max model. This new slim iPhone 17 variant is set to take inspiration from the iPhone X in terms of design.
In a major change, the cameras on this model will be placed in the top-center position on the back. Apple has followed the trend of adding rear cameras in the top-left corner since the iPhone X. The camera module may look a bit like the Google Pixel.
Additional design changes could include a thinner Dynamic Island, aluminum frame, and a screen size of 6.1 inches to 6.7 inches.
In terms of internal design, the slim iPhone 17 model will be equipped with the A19 chipset and will have an improved selfie camera. With all the changes, this model can cost up to $ 1,199, which is the current price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
iPhone 17 Pro Max will have more RAM, better cooling system than iPhone 17 Pro and other models
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently detailed how the iPhone 17 Pro Max will outperform the rest of the iPhone 17 models, including the iPhone 17 Pro, when they launch next year. Of course, AI is the reason behind the Pro Max's superior performance by the end of 2025.
Increase RAM
First, Kuo expects the 2025 iPhone 17 Pro Max to have 12GB of RAM. That compares to 8GB of RAM in the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max. The iPhone 16 series is expected to have 8GB of RAM.
The standard iPhone 17 Pro won’t get the same RAM boost, Kuo says. Apple typically releases new camera features to the Pro Max before bringing them to the Pro, but this would be the first time RAM makes a difference.
Maximum cooling system
Better multitasking means more heat, so Kuo believes Apple will introduce a new cooling system for the iPhone.
This system, which will only be available on the iPhone 17 Pro Max in 2025, will work alongside the graphite sheet cooling technology used in current iPhones.
Vapor cooling has been used in some of Samsung's high-end smartphones. In short, the technology draws heat away from the chipset. Watch the video below for a more detailed explanation:
Maximum segment
Why target the Pro Max model for these changes instead of the rest of the line? The advantage of the Pro Max is that it has more internal space. The premium price allows Apple to experiment with more advanced technology before shrinking it down and putting it into more devices.
In this case, Apple will market the iPhone 17 Pro Max as the iPhone that is best able to handle AI tasks as Apple Intelligence develops. The iPhone 18 Pro is likely to be targeted for increased RAM and a new cooling system in 2026, but Kuo doesn’t make any predictions. However, Kuo does say that the Pro Max models will account for 2 out of 5 new iPhones sold.
The move would also give Apple an indirect way to monetize its AI efforts. While Apple Intelligence may be available for free on compatible Apple devices, retaining the best performance and capabilities for its expensive top-of-the-line hardware would be good for Apple’s bottom line.
When Apple launches the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max on September 9, expect the Pro models to feature the same 5x zoom feature that the iPhone 15 Pro Max introduced. As this year’s Pro models catch up to last year’s Pro Max, Apple will continue to find new ways to push the technology further into larger, more expensive devices. Kuo also expects the ultra-thin iPhone 17 to feature 8GB of RAM, like the rumored 16 series and SE 4.
Now the real question: Will Apple still sell Macs with 8GB of RAM as standard when even iPhones start shipping with 12GB of RAM in 2025?
iPhone 17 Pro Max likely to get triple 48MP cameras for improved zoom capabilities
With the launch of the iPhone 15, Apple made a surprising switch to a 48MP wide camera sensor on the regular models. The upcoming iPhone 16 models will likely arrive with a similar camera setup, with the Pro models getting a Tetraprism telephoto lens. Interestingly, Apple is planning something big with the iPhone 17 series that will surely please photography enthusiasts. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, next year's iPhone 17 Pro Max will mark its debut with an upgraded 48MP Tetraprism camera with enhanced zoom functionality.
In his latest note, Ming-Chi Kuo wrote that the main spec change will be a 48MP 1/2.6-inch CIS sensor, up from the 1/3.1-inch 12MP sensor, which will likely be used in the 2024 iPhone 16 Pro models.
The upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are expected to feature a Tetraprism telephoto lens. On the iPhone 15 series, this technology is limited to the Pro Max model. The iPhone 15 Pro has a 12MP telephoto camera with 3x zoom, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max has an upgraded 5x telephoto lens. The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will have at least 5x optical zoom and at least 25x digital zoom.
At the moment, Kuo is still uncertain about whether the upgraded Tetraprism camera will be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Kuo also mentioned that the improved Tetraprism camera requires newly designed prisms with a shorter profile to reduce the height of the camera.
Kuo’s recent report corroborates Jeff Pu’s earlier claims, in which he mentioned that the upgraded 48MP telephoto lens on the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be optimized for use with Apple Vision Pro. The current iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max can shoot spatial videos for Vision Pro. When shooting video on the iPhone in landscape mode, the 48MP main lens and 12MP ultra-wide lens will work together to capture spatial videos with additional depth.
If the rumors and predictions are correct, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will become the first iPhone model to feature an advanced rear camera system that includes a 48MP lens. The current iPhone 15 Pro models have a 48MP main lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 12MP telephoto lens.
It's worth noting that the iPhone 17 series is still over a year away and these rumors may or may not come true, so stay tuned!
