Choking in a newborn is the phenomenon of milk spilling into the baby's airways, causing difficulty breathing, cyanosis, which can lead to cardiac arrest. In the absence of timely emergency, the baby choking on milk can die.
Victoria Dawson, a 30-year-old nurse from Ruskington, Lincolnshire, was shocked when her newborn son Eddie choked on his mother's milk.
For a few seconds, my little body remained in her arms, and when Victoria looked down at her four-week baby, she was pale and stopped breathing.
"He started coughing and his mouth was overflowing and I pulled him out, he was completely pale and his body was soft," she said.
She called out to her husband, Alex for help, and immediately panicked and called for an ambulance.
Victoria's nursing instincts started and she immediately knew she needed to do something.
"I put my finger gently in Eddie's mouth to see if there was milk there and I didn't feel anything but knew he was choking ," she recalls. However, my body is still soft and my skin tone is pale - I have had jaundice so I gradually turned from yellow to gray. "
She saw that the baby was not breathing, so she gave him CPR while her husband was on the phone calling an ambulance.
Doctors advised her to put Eddie on the floor and treat cardiopulmonary or CPR.
"I don't know how many pushes I pushed, maybe 5-6, but she started taking a big breath and slowly started to turn around."
"There was a big gap between the next breaths and I still didn't feel relieved until the paramedics arrived," she added. "It looks like he stopped breathing for the longest time but it could only be a minute. "
When the paramedics arrived, they provided Eddie with oxygen and took his child to the hospital for observation.
Victoria said the experience was terrifying, and she cried for two days after it happened. "I was very anxious with the feeding after that and am still nervous until now but I will try to work slowly again."
"I've done CPR for adults but never thought I'd have to use it for my kids," she said. "We actually thought we had lost our baby in that moment, but luckily my instincts kicked in."
The cause of babies choking on milk is often parents or caregivers let the baby suckle in the wrong position, breastfeed when the baby is coughing or crying. Or it could be that the breastmilk drops too much or the nipple is too wide, causing the milk to flow a lot, flowing strongly and the baby can't swallow, leading to choking.
Pay attention to the following signs as it is a warning that your baby is choking on milk:
Babies who are suckling or lying down (after eating) suddenly have a strong cough, coughing up, pale, and passing away
The baby cried out suddenly
Milk flowing out of the child's nose and mouth
Children panic, pale skin, may be tender or cramp
Children may stop breathing if the condition is severe
Because the risk of dying from choking on infants is so high, proper first aid treatment is important, helping children quickly get out of danger.
