You should use a TPM 2.0 chip to upgrade your system to Windows 11 even though TPM 1.2 already meets the minimum criteria. Microsoft requires this technology to improve customer security, although many experts say those specifications are excessive.

Therefore, if you want to upgrade to Windows 11, you must install the appropriate version of TPM on your computer.

How to check TPM on computer

The easiest way to check if a TMP chip is present on your computer is to use the get-tpm command on Windows PowerShell.

To do this, enter PowerShell in the Start menu search bar . Right-click on the result on Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator . Click Yes on the confirmation window.

In the Windows PowerShell app, type get-tpm , then press Enter . You will see the following results:

If TpmPresent returns False , it means the motherboard does not have a TPM chip. Conversely, if you receive the following results:

TpmPresent : True
TpmReady : False

After that, you can enable the TPM chip in BIOS/UEFI and check if the computer configuration is eligible for Windows 11 upgrade.

Windows 11 upgrade configuration requirements:

  • CPU : 1Ghz or higher on compatible 64-bit processor or system on chip
  • GPU : DirectX 12 compatible with WDDM 2.0 driver
  • RAM : 4GB or more
  • Hard drive : 64GB or more
  • System software : UEFI, secure boot capable
  • TPM : Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0
  • Screen : HD (720p) screen larger than 9 inches diagonally, 8 bits per color channel
  • Internet connection and Microsoft account : Windows 11 Home edition requires an Internet connection and a Microsoft account to complete device setup on first use. Switching a device out of Windows 11 Home in S mode also requires an internet connection.

How to check TPM version

The minimum requirement to run Windows 11 is that your computer needs to install TPM 1.2, TPM 2.0 is recommended as mentioned above. If you try to upgrade Windows 11 with the TPM 1.2 chip, you will receive the message " upgrade is not advised ".
