In January, Nvidia launched its latest RTX 50 series graphics cards, introducing the fourth version of Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology to users. This AI-based technology has been improved almost completely, including the ability to generate frames and transformer-based models to improve image quality. Today, the company continues to confirm the release of DLSS 4 as a plugin for Unreal Engine 5.
Nvidia hardware-exclusive feature set includes:
- Multi Frame Generation
- Frame Generation
- Ray Reconstruction
- Super Resolution
- DLAA (Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing)
- Reflex Low Latency
- NVIDIA Image Scaling
Note that while DLSS 4 supports graphics cards from the RTX 20 series and above, not all DLSS 4 features are available for older generations.
Below are the DLSS 4 technologies that use neural rendering techniques and their corresponding specific functions:
- DLSS Multi Frame Generation: Boost frame rates by using AI to generate up to three frames for every rendered frame, powered by GeForce RTX 50 Series and fifth-generation Tensor Cores.
- DLSS Frame Generation: Boost performance by using AI to generate frames while maintaining high responsiveness with NVIDIA Reflex.
- DLSS Ray Reconstruction: Improve image quality by using AI to create additional pixels in complex ray-traced scenes. DLSS replaces manually tuned denoisers with an AI network trained on NVIDIA supercomputers, creating higher-quality pixels between sampled rays.
- DLSS Super Resolution: Boost performance by using AI to output higher resolution frames from lower resolution input. DLSS samples multiple low resolution images and uses motion data and feedback from previous frames to produce high quality images.
- Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing (DLAA): Delivers higher image quality with AI-based anti-aliasing. DLAA uses the same Super Resolution technology developed for DLSS, producing realistic, high-quality images at native resolution.
So far, games like Cyberpunk 2077, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Alan Wake 2, Marvel Rivals, and Star Wars Outlaws have been updated to support DLSS 4. With the official plugin for Unreal Engine 5, users can expect more upcoming games to integrate these upscaling and framerate features.
The DLSS 4 plugin for Unreal Engine 5 supports versions 5.5, 5.4, 5.3, and 5.2. You can download it and learn more about DLSS and how to implement it on Nvidia's developer website.
